Description
This is a painted portrait of Tyranza, an elephant I met and photographed at the Memphis Zoo in 2017. She and I were born the same year, so I felt a connection to her. I was sad to hear that Ty passed away in 2020. At that time, Tyranza was the oldest African elephant in North America and she set the record for longest-lived African elephant in North America as well. She was orphaned after she was born in the wild, and then became a circus elephant with Ringling Brothers for a short time prior to being retired to the Memphis Zoo in 1977.
